Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who popularized beach bum soft rock with the escapist Caribbean-flavored song “Margaritaville” and turned that celebration of loafing into a billion-dollar empire of restaurants, resorts and frozen concoctions, has died. He was 76.“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement posted to Buffett’s official website and social media pages said late Friday. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”The statement did not say where Buffett died or give a cause of death. (AP) — The entrance to the Burning Man counterculture festival in the Nevada desert was closed and attendees were urged to shelter in place Saturday as flooding from storms swept through the area.The entrance will be closed for the remainder of the event, which began on Aug. 27 and was scheduled to end on Monday, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which oversees the Black Rock Desert where the festival is being held.About 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain is believed to have fallen on Friday at the festival site, located about 110 miles (177 kilometers) north of Reno, the National Weather Service in Reno said. Toronto is under a heat warning for the next several days as temperatures and humidex values are expected to be among the highest this summer. Environment and Climate Change Canada says temperatures over the next three to five days will be “atypical of early September.”“We are expecting temperatures to hit near 30 or above tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday and even Wednesday …the temperatures really hot during the afternoon,” says CityNews 680 weather specialist Denise Andreacchi. “Humidex pushing 40 in some communities in southern Ontario and we also have very high UV index.”This will be one of the hottest stretches of weather we have had in the GTA in a while. TORONTO — Raymond Moriyama, a renowned architect behind the design of some of Canada’s most iconic buildings, has died. Artscape has received a temporary reprieve from receivership. Mayor Olivia Chow says thanks to TD Bank and the city, the non-profit’s move into bankruptcy has been delayed for at least 30 days. Chow says she’s convened a working group that includes city staff, philanthropic, business and community leaders to come up with a sustainable solution. “Artscape is a vital source of affordable living and working space for Toronto’s arts and culture community. Our city needs more, not less, affordable spaces for artists,” the mayor said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
