Nick Pivetta may have been removed from the starting rotation in mid-May, but he’s proven invaluable as an innings-eater out of the bullpen, and Friday he delivered one of his strongest efforts yet.Pivetta threw five quality innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. He entered the game in the third following opener Brennan Bernardino, by which point the offense had already erupted for five runs en route to a decisive 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.Since moving to the bullpen Pivetta has posted a 2.79 ERA in 14 relief appearances, a marked improvement from his ugly 6.30 ERA over his first eight starts. VISTA, Calif. -- A Marine accused of driving drunk and causing a car crash that killed 12-year-old Santiago Gaspar in Oceanside will remain in jail on no bail.  The defendant Edward Minot Jr. had his first court appearance on Friday in Vista. EAGLE PASS, Texas (AP) — Texas began rolling out what is set to become a new floating barrier on the Rio Grande on Friday in the latest escalation of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s multibillion-dollar effort to secure the U.S. border with Mexico, which already has included bussing migrants to liberal states and authorizing the National Guard to make arrests. But even before the huge, orange buoys were unloaded from the trailers that hauled them to the border city of Eagle Pass, there were concerns over this part of Abbott’s unprecedented challenge to the federal government’s authority over immigration enforcement. Work in Eisenhower Tunnel will require partial overnight closures

Work will begin Sunday to remove and replace all cameras, message boards, lane-use signs and fiber in the Interstate 70 Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel, a project that is expected to take until summer of 2024.The direction of overnight traffic will have to be alternated Sundays through Thursdays, with full closure of one bore of the tunnel at a time. Work will begin at 10 p.m. and last until 5 a.m.When one tunnel bore is closed, traffic along Interstate 70 in both directions will be stopped at the tunnel entrance. Traffic in one direction at a time will be escorted through the open bore.The Colorado Department of Transportation said traffic stops are expected to last for 20 minutes. Delays are expected to be minimal because the work will be done overnight.The project by CDOT and contractor Sturgeon Electric will upgrade the cameras and signs in the tunnel that CDOT’s traffic operations center uses to monitor the safety and health of travelers driving through the Eisenhower Tunnel...
