80-foot Norway spruce gets the nod as Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, will be cut down next week

NEW YORK (AP) — An 80-foot-tall (24-meter) Norway spruce from the Binghamton area has been selected as this year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and will be cut down and trucked to New York City next week, Rockefeller Center officials announced Wednesday.The tree will be cut on Nov. 9 in Vestal, New York, and will arrive at Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan on Nov. 11, the officials said.After it’s wrapped in more than 50,000 lights and crowned with a star, the tree will be lighted during a live television broadcast on Nov. 29. It will be on display until Jan. 13, 2024.The Rockefeller Center tree is one of New York City’s most popular holiday attractions, drawing throngs of admirers every year.Vestal is about 190 miles (306 kilometers) northwest of New York City.The Associated Press

Car stolen with 1-year-old inside on Southwest Side; child found safe

CHICAGO — Police are searching for a man who stole a vehicle with a toddler inside on the city's Southwest Side.The incident happened around 12:54 a.m. Wednesday in the 7100 block of South Western Avenue. Police said a man entered a vehicle that was left running and drove off in it.According to police, a 1-year-old child was inside the vehicle at the time it was stolen.The vehicle was recovered a short time later in the 6900 block of South Maplewood with the child safely inside.The child was transported to Comer Children's Hospital for evaluation. 2 arrested in attempted crash and grab at retail store on West Side No one is in custody. Area One Detectives are investigating.

Heavily armed man found dead at Colorado amusement park may have left message on wall, sheriff says

DENVER (KDVR) — Police say the heavily armed man who was found dead inside a Colorado theme park over the weekend had likely planned to use those weapons in an attack on the community.The man, identified as 20-year-old Diego Barajas Medina, was found dead inside the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park prior to the park's opening on Saturday morning, according to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office.A coroner later confirmed Medina's cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Former MLB player charged in the shooting of his in-laws pleads not guilty Medina was found dressed in black-colored tactical clothing, bearing patches and emblems that gave the appearance of someone with law enforcement.
